Don't Infringe On My Social Space Friend Posted: 11 May 2012 08:18 PM PDT Social media....the clue's in the name. It's a place where we chat, discuss, share, vent...a virtual gathering where we openly talk to people we largely don't know, will never meet and probably don't share much in common with - expect our purpose for being amongst that community at the time. Because it's that shared passion ... |
Posted: 11 May 2012 04:48 PM PDT Barack Obama's mother died on Nov. 7, 1995, a few weeks before her 53rd birthday. She was less than two years older than the president is now. Her death from uterine cancer came between two key events in her son's life. Four months earlier "Dreams From My Father" had been published; it seemed destined to drown unnoticed in the deep ocean of books. One year later Obama won his first election, to the Illinois state Senate, the initial stop on his swift journey to the White House that, along the way, brought a mass audience to that forgotten memoir, which in its best-selling revival defined his political image and provided him with lifelong financial security. Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin gives up U.S. citizenship Posted: 11 May 2012 02:19 PM PDT Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin has given up his U.S. citizenship, a move that will reduce his taxes when Facebook goes public in the coming weeks. Saverin, who was born in Brazil and moved to the U.S. in 1992 and has been a U.S. citizen since 1998, has decided to become a resident of Singapore. He is said to own around 5 percent of the company, which has a valuation of between $77 billion and $96 billion according to paperwork filed ahead of its initial public offering. In Italy, a spiritual search for the essence of espresso Posted: 11 May 2012 08:04 AM PDT For the espresso obsessed (like me), visiting Italy is like journeying to Mecca: Caffeine-loving crusaders seek answers by crossing time, language and cultural barriers to visit the drink's motherland. And although it's not a sip from an Islamic holy well, this potent secular beverage does transport devotees to a higher plane — if only until the jitters wear off. Read full article >> |

U.S. calls on Mali coup leader to step aside Posted: 11 May 2012 07:55 PM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department on Friday called on the officer who led a military coup in Mali in March to step aside and allow for the full return to civilian rule. The State Department said the coup leaders had undermined democracy and hampered the West African nation's ability to respond to the humanitarian crisis in northern Mali. "A strong, stable democratic government in Mali is essential in order for the country to deal successfully with its multiple economic, social and security challenges," the department said in a statement. ... |

'Dark Shadows' Is More Light Than Dark Posted: 11 May 2012 07:29 PM PDT As the credits rolled at the end of Dark Shadows, my father turned to me and said, "I don't get it. Was it supposed to be a comedy or a horror?" I didn't understand what he meant: obviously it was a comedy. There were some watered down PG-13 horror, but there was nothing about it I considered horrific. But when you consider the movie is about the vampires, witches, and yes, even werewolves, it would have been nice to have had my flesh crawl just once. It doesn't mean that I didn't like Dark Shadows???after all, it starred Johnny Depp, who is so talented that he deserves every acting award ever invented and a few that haven't???but it left me wanting more. |
