South Africa police foil right-wing plot against ANC meeting Posted: 16 Dec 2012 11:13 PM PST BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa (Reuters) - South African police said on Monday they had foiled a plot by suspected right-wing extremists to bomb a major meeting of the ruling African National Congress (ANC). Four men, aged between 40 and 50, were arrested on Sunday, the police said in a statement. "They planned to plant a bomb in one of the tents," national police spokesman Phuti Setati said. Close to 5,000 ANC members, including President Jacob Zuma, government ministers and top business people are attending the conference in the central city of Bloemfontein under heavy police presence. ... |

Blast kills 10 Afghan girls collecting firewood Posted: 16 Dec 2012 11:15 PM PST JALALABAD, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A blast killed 10 Afghan girls as they were collecting firewood in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, government officials said. It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion in volatile Nangarhar province. It could have been a bomb planted by Taliban insurgents or a landmine left over from decades of conflict. The girls, between nine and 11 years old, were collecting wood in remote Chaparhar district, near the porous border with Pakistan, which is infested with some of the world's most dangerous militant groups. ... |
