Searching For Local Culture In Abu Dhabi Posted: 26 May 2013 10:40 PM PDT You go to Dubai for the flash, I'd always heard, and Abu Dhabi for the culture. When I went to Abu Dhabi, though, I kept hearing that if you were single, you lived in Dubai for the bars/nightclubs/action but if you were married, you lived in Abu Dhabi because it was calmer, easier, better for families. Since I'd just come from close to a month in India and all of its fascinating if nerve jangling frenzy, cooling down, at least in energy terms, was appealing. So were the perfect roads in this emirate, flush with cash with 95% of the UAE's oil, perfect cars (in several days, I saw only one car that looked more than a year old) orderly traffic and lack of noise. But where was the culture? |

What A.G. Lafley's New And Improved Procter & Gamble Must Do Now: Adapt and Change Posted: 26 May 2013 10:08 PM PDT Hearing, "Mr. Ackman is on the phone for you" may be the most terrifying words for a CEO of a major company. Last week Ackman, an activist investor and hedge fund manager, engineered Bob McDonald's ouster as Procter & Gamble's CEO, not long after putting pressure on another board to remove Ron Johnson as CEO of JC Penney. |
Obama’s new drone policy leaves room for CIA role Posted: 25 May 2013 03:27 PM PDT Four years ago, as a new al-Qaeda affiliate in Yemen was proving itself a potent adversary, the Obama administration made plans to attack it with airstrikes just as the United States had been doing to the terrorist network's core in Pakistan. 5 Ways Leaders Empower The Social Enterprise Posted: 26 May 2013 06:50 PM PDT We all saw the power of social and community last week in Oklahoma. People came together and the result was something unified and powerful and greater than the sum of its parts. I'm always inspired when I see the dynamic things a strong community can accomplish. It's a force leaders must create in their enterprises. Community is about people communicating and bonding, pooling their strengths and talents to deliver amazing performance. To make it happen, leaders have some exciting new tools in the form of social media, digital networks and big data. |
The Hidden Cost Of Leak Investigations Posted: 26 May 2013 06:39 PM PDT There's an interesting line in this New York Times piece on how the Obama administration's war on leaks is chilling investigative journalism. Tommy Vietor, a former spokesman for the National Security Council, says of the president: "He makes the case that we have 18-year-olds out fighting wars and acting like adults, and we have senior administration officials quoted in stories acting like children." |

Krugtron The Invincible Slays Himself Posted: 26 May 2013 06:05 PM PDT No sooner do I call out Paul Krugman by name as the epitome of narrow-minded wonkocrats than he attacks me implicitly, not knowing any better, in a tossed-off broadside against "reformish conservatives." Despite what The Washington Monthly may hint about renegades on the right, Krugtron the Invincible is unconvinced: "there remains essentially no room for independent thinking," he sniffs, "within the conservative movement." |
