Philippine boxing champ Pacquiao sworn in as congressman Posted: 27 Jun 2010 04:06 PM PDT Trading his gloves for a traditional formal shirt, Pacquiao was among local officials who took their oaths of office in the capital of Sarangani province where he knocked out an entrenched political clan in the May 10 elections. "I will be more effective in politics than in boxing," he told the crowd of 3,000 after the ceremonies. The 31-year-old fighter said he would work on improving infrastructure, medical services and security during his three-year term in Parliament. Pacquiao, who is regarded as a national hero in the boxing crazy Philippines, has said he can continue to fight even while serving as a legislator. Boxing promoters are working to arrange a bout between Pacquiao and American Floyd Mayweather in November, to settle once and for all the fighters' claim to be the best fighter, pound-for-pound, of their generation. Negotiations for a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight fell through earlier this year when the American insisted on Olympic-style random drug testing, which the Filipino rejected as too intrusive before a bout. His winnings from boxing as well as his commercial endorsements last year made Pacquiao the world's sixth-highest paid athlete, with earnings of US$40 million (RM129 million), according to Forbes magazine. - AFP |
Sumo stablemaster offers to resign over scandal Posted: 27 Jun 2010 04:02 PM PDT Stablemaster Otake's offer came as the Japan Sumo Association held an emergency meeting to discuss punishment for dozens of stablemasters and grapplers over a gambling scandal that has hit the sport's increasingly tarnished image. The association met after a panel of outside experts investigating dozens of wrestlers with alleged links to underworld crime rings demanded that wrestler Kotomitsuki -- ranked second only to the yokozuna grand champion -- and two sumo masters should be penalised. Kotomitsuki faces being banned from sumo's summer grand tournament in July following the recommendations of the panel. Stablemaster Otake, who allegedly held the deepest involvement with the baseball gambling scheme submitted a letter of resignation to the association. Police have arrested a former wrestler, Mitsutomo Furuichi, 38, who is accused of demanding hush money from Kotomitsuki to cover up the second-ranking champion's alleged involvement in illegal sports gambling. Public opinion has rapidly turned against the sumo establishment as the gambling scandal widened, with sumo officials perceived to have done little to investigate and publicise the problem. The scandal could torpedo next month's grand tournament, which national broadcaster NHK is threatening to abandon. Big-name sponsors have already turned their backs on the tournament. For the first time since World War II, the sumo association has postponed the announcement of a ranking list ahead of the 15-day July tournament because so many wrestlers face expulsion from the event. - AFP |
