Major 7.6 earthquake, tsunami hit Pacific's Vanuatu Posted: 09 Aug 2010 04:01 PM PDT SYDNEY: A major 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu today, shaking buildings and generating a small tsunami, but there no immediate reports of injury or damage. The undersea earthquake struck at a depth of 60km (37 miles) roughly 40km from the main island of Efate, which includes the capital Port Vila, Geoscience Australia said. Local residents said the earth shook for about 15 seconds but did not appear to have caused significant damage. "It wasn't too much," a Port Vila hotel employee said, referring to the shaking. "Everything's fine." The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a 23-centimetre (9.2 inch) tsunami hit Port Vila, but warned bigger waves may be seen in other areas. "Higher wave amplitudes may yet be observed along coasts near the earthquake epicentre," the centre said. Vanuatu, which lies between Fiji and Australia and north of New Zealand, is in the "Pacific Ring of Fire" known for its seismic and volcanic activity caused by friction between moving plates in the Earth's crust. In May, a 7.2 earthquake prompted a brief tsunami alert, and at least three earthquakes measuring 6.0 or stronger have hit the archipelago since the start of July. The country was hit by three major quakes last October, while a giant plume of volcanic ash has disrupted domestic flights in neighbouring New Caledonia in recent months. The US Geological Survey measured Tuesday's earthquake at 7.5 and said it was 35km deep, and just 40km from Port Vila. - AFP |
Philippines aiming to strike gambling gold Posted: 09 Aug 2010 03:58 PM PDT MANILA: The Philippines is aiming to become Asia's next big gambling hub with casino and entertainment resorts built in key tourist spots across the country, the nation's gaming regulator said today. An "Entertainment City" in Manila to rival boom towns Macau and Singapore is at the heart of the plan and will hopefully be finished by 2014, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) chairman Cristino Naguiat said. "The casino industry here in the Philippines has a very huge potential in terms of revenues," Naguiat, who took over as chairman a month ago, said in an interview. "We are way behind Macau and Singapore in terms of the casino industry... (but) we would like to be positioned right at the top." Naguiat said the government was looking to eventually build integrated casino and entertainment resorts in other parts of the Philippines, including picturesque Palawan island and Cebu, the nation's second biggest city. He said PAGCOR was open to hearing from foreign players interested in building entertainment resorts around the Philippines. "We would like to receive their proposals with regard to this," he said. But Naguiat emphasised only proposals that incorporated other entertainment aspects aside from gambling, such as amusement centres and museums, would be considered. "It has to be an integrated resort, not just a casino and a hotel," he said. - AFP |
BlackBerry messenger still functioning in Saudi Arabia Posted: 09 Aug 2010 03:51 PM PDT Many users in the western port city and business hub of Jeddah said the service was working without interruption, but no official announcement on an agreement to allow government monitoring has been made. The Saudi telecoms watchdog had postponed until Monday evening a suspension that was due to come into force on Friday, allowing time to test suggested technical solutions giving authorities access to BlackBerry's encrypted data. Among the reported solutions to avert a halt to BlackBerry's key messenger service is the installation of a local server accessible to Saudi authorities, instead of the data going directly to the smartphone maker's servers in Canada. Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) announced last week it ordered mobile telephone operators to block key BlackBerry services from August 6 or face a 1.3-million-dollar fine. It said the suspension was due to the fact that "the way BlackBerry services are provided currently does not meet the regulatory criteria of the commission and the licensing conditions." More than 700,000 people subscribe to BlackBerry in the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom, with most reportedly purchasing the handheld device for personal use. But Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, has expressed fears the popular smartphone could jeopardise its security. The threat of a Saudi ban came hot on the heels of an announcement by the telecoms authority in the United Arab Emirates to ban BlackBerry messenger, emails and web browsing from October 11, for similar reasons. - AFP |
