India marks two years since the Mumbai attacks Posted: 25 Nov 2010 04:31 PM PST
Police and security forces who tackled the 10 Islamist gunmen paraded through the city, while mourners also gathered at the hotels, railway station, cafe and Jewish centre where the massacres took place. The attackers arrived by sea on the evening of Nov 26, and authorities regained full control of the city only three days later. Live television footage was shown around the world as commandos battled with the militants and terrified civilians tried to escape the bloodbath. About 300 people were injured. Nine of the gunmen were killed and the sole survivor, Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, was condemned to death by a Mumbai court in May. He is challenging the sentence. Both New Delhi and Washington blame the attacks on the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba. "We will never succumb to the designs of our enemies," Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in a statement today. "We pledge to redouble our efforts to bring the perpetrators of this crime against humanity to justice." Police officers were due to unveil a memorial to Constable Tukaram Ombale at Chowpatty beach in south Mumbai, where he lost his life as he tackled Kasab. Earlier this month, US President Barack Obama visited the city, and met the families of victims and survivors, as well as paying his respects at a memorial in the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, which was one of the militants' prime targets. Obama and his delegation made a point of staying overnight at the hotel, the scene of a three-day siege, in what was seen as a gesture of solidarity. Solidarity with India US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a statement in Washington late Wednesday which also expressed the United States' solidarity with India. "As the people of the United States gather with family to celebrate Thanksgiving, we pause to remember the horrific attack on innocent men, women and children that occurred in Mumbai two years ago," Clinton said. India has accused Islamabad of not doing enough to bring the plotters behind the attacks to justice, and the incident still colours relations between the two nuclear-armed rivals. India yesterday sent an official diplomatic message to Pakistan's embassy in New Delhi, urging its neighbour to "fulfil its obligation and commitment" to bring the plotters of the Mumbai attacks to justice. The letter accused Islamabad of stalling over the trial in Pakistan of seven suspects accused of plotting the attacks, adding that "New Delhi expresses regret for not receiving feedback on issues raised by it". Indian authorities remain wary of further attacks by Pakistan-based Islamist militants, and security in Mumbai was raised for the anniversary. "With the terror threat lingering over the city in the view of the second anniversary... we have made elaborate security arrangements and Mumbai has been put on alert," senior city policeman Rajkumar Vhatkar said. Home Minister P Chidambaram attended a commemoration function in Mumbai, while other senior politicians laid wreaths at a martyrs' memorial at a police club. Candlelight vigils were held overnight and a multi-faith meeting will be held at the Gateway of India monument in the evening. - AFP |
China talent show beauty dies during plastic surgery Posted: 25 Nov 2010 04:29 PM PST BEIJING: The death of an aspiring Chinese pop singer during plastic surgery has cast an ugly light on an obsession with beauty that sees millions go under the knife in China each year. Wang Bei, 24, a former contestant on China's answer to "American Idol", died on Nov 15 during "facial bone-grinding surgery" in the central city of Wuhan, Chinese media have reported. That Wang even felt she needed to improve her looks has underlined the extent to which cosmetic surgery has taken hold. Her beauty had already made her a popular contestant on the smash television hit "Super Girl". Her death has fuelled concerns about the dangers of plastic surgery in a country where three million people have operations each year to improve their appearances, according to figures published by state media. An "anaesthetic accident" occurred during Wang's procedure at the Zhong Ao Cosmetic Surgery Hospital, according to Xinhua news agency, citing the local health bureau. Wang's jaw suddenly started bleeding during the procedure, blocking her windpipe and causing her to suffocate, reports said. Wang's mother was having the same procedure at the clinic when her daughter died. Surging demand for cosmetic surgery has led to untrained doctors carrying out operations, "which is risky and irresponsible", Zhang Huabin, a professor of plastic surgery at southern China's Guangdong Medical College, was quoted by Xinhua saying. Web users also have vented concern and questioned why a pretty girl like Wang would feel the need for plastic surgery. "I hope the tragedy can raise people's awareness of the slack supervision of the plastic surgery industry," one web user said. Wang "paid a painful price for beauty," said an entry on popular Internet portal sina.com. Another web user asked why Wang wanted cosmetic surgery when she was already "so beautiful". "It is not possible to be famous only based on one's face," the posting said. - AFP |

North Korea warns US, South they are inching to 'brink of war' Posted: 25 Nov 2010 03:37 PM PST The hardline communist regime on Tuesday fired shells and rockets at the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong, killing four people. It later claimed it was retaliating after South Korea had staged military exercises. The USS George Washington carrier strike group, based in Japan, was today heading for waters west of the Korean peninsula where the US and South Korea plan four days of naval exercises in the Yellow Sea from Sunday. US Forces Korea said in a statement on Wednesday the drill had been planned well before North Korea's "unprovoked artillery attack" but it demonstrated the US "commitment to regional stability through deterrence". Pyongyang's state-run Korean Central News Agency, in an article today on the planned war games, attacked "the US imperialists and south Korean puppet war-like forces" for what it called an exercise in "sabre-rattling". "The situation on the Korean Peninsula is inching closer to the brink of war due to the reckless plan of those trigger-happy elements to stage again the war exercises targeted against the DPRK," it said, using the country's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. US Forces Korea said in its statement on Wednesday that the exercise is defensive in nature. "While planned well before yesterday's unprovoked artillery attack, it demonstrates the strength of the Republic of South Korea-US alliance and our commitment to regional stability through deterrence," it said. "It is also designed to improve our military interoperability." The statement said that the US Navy "routinely operates in the waters off the Korean peninsula and has conducted numerous operations and exercises in this area." North Korea's key ally China said yesterday it opposed the US-South Korea war games. "We have taken note of relevant reports and express concern," foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters when asked about the exercises. "We oppose any act that undermines peace and stability on the peninsula." China has previously come out strongly against such exercises in what it sees as its backyard, saying they risk exacerbating tensions. - AFP |
