As the waters rose Monday night, much of Lower Manhattan went dark. Hurricane Sandy plowed into New York Harbor at high tide, resulting in a storm surge of over 13 feet. At least 660,000 people in New York lost power, with an explosion knocking out a substation at 14th Street and some of the grid taken offline to avoid damage.
