"I hate tombs," Lara Croft says as she's standing in the middle of, whaddya know, a tomb. Although we've seen many a crypt in her future, Lara in Tomb Raider (2013) is a younger, more squeamish version of herself in this thoroughly enjoyable origin story. Our tomb raider is almost a tomb afraider.

SXSW embraces the complexity of the web

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 09:34 PM PST

Day 1 SXSW - Bre Pettis began the day with the opening keynote. The thing about Bre is you know he has a real vision of how he can change the world - and he's just getting started.  It's easy to think of MakerBot as a 3d printer -and while it is that - it is so much more.  For Pettis,  who provided the opening keynote to this years SXSW conf in Austin - the shift is more fundamental than that. It's about changing our society from a group of 'consumers'  to a new world in which we are all makers.  Creators.  Contributors to the creative collective good.  So when he says 3d printing is about more than just making a plastic shot glass or a lego brick - he means it.  He shared with the standing room only crowd his latest piece of the 'maker' puzzle,  a device called the MakerBot Digitizer.  A pair of lasers,  a camera,  and a rotating platform.  Now creating 3d designs doesn't require an art or engineering background.  Just take the thing you want to replicated,  and put it on the Digitizer.  Minutes later, you have a 3d design that can be printed, and re-printed,  forever.

Another update in the never ending saga that is the SimCity launch debacle. Maxis General Manager Lucy Bradshaw just made a post over on EA's website that accomplishes two things. 1) It's meant to be a down to earth apology for the problems so far, promising they'll be fixed soon: "So what went wrong?  The short answer is: a lot more people logged on than we expected.  More people played and played in ways we never saw in the beta. OK, we agree, that was dumb, but we are committed to fixing it." And 2) Hey look, free stuff! It's this part that might catch some attention: "To get us back in your good graces, we're going to offer you a free PC download game from the EA portfolio.  On March 18, SimCity players who have activated their game will receive an email telling them how to redeem their free game.
