Burma's Reforms aren't Trickling Down to Small Businesses

It was a blisteringly hot day in Pyay, a midsized Burmese city that was the commercial center of the region and a tourist gateway for Burma's undeveloped beaches.  I was walking up the town's main drag, a two laned thoroughfare whose traffic signals were respected, and whose sidewalks were lined with street cart vendors and the city's most prominent businesses.

China Scores Earlier Release, Extra Footage Of Disney's 'Iron Man 3'

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 10:00 PM PDT

For proof of how overseas markets drive Hollywood, look no further than Disney's 'Iron Man 3'. The action-hero movie was co-financed by DMG, a Chinese media company that has the rights to distribute the film in China. Disney said last week that, contrary to DMG's earlier hype, the film isn't an official Chinese co-production, a status that gives foreign studios a bigger box-office cut. But Chinese audiences will see extra footage that didn't make the cut for global audiences, including a star turn from Fan Bingbing. Director Shane Black shot these scenes and others in China last year. The film's premiere also trumps the U.S. release: Apr. 26, the same as the U.K. and other markets. U.S. audiences will wait another week for the film to open (May 2). This upends the old Hollywood playbook of domestic premieres followed by overseas markets. Now the focus for big-budget flicks is on satisfying global audiences that can be lured into theatres while the buzz is strong, particularly in markets where piracy is rampant.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un presides over a plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea in PyongyangBy Matt Spetalnick and Mark Hosenball WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korea's young leader Kim Jong-un is using his forebears' time-tested "crazy-guy-in-the-neighborhood" strategy, senior U.S. officials say, but with a provocative new twist - aiming Pyongyang's threats directly at the United States. There are indeed signs of an earlier method in what might seem like Kim's rhetorical madness, which U.S. policymakers say is patterned after more than a half century of rule over the reclusive state by his father and grandfather. But with a large degree of uncertainty surrounding Kim and limited U.S. ...

Should Arkansas Take the Obamacare Medicaid Deal? Probably Not

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 09:01 PM PDT

Arkansas has attracted national attention over the possibility that the Obama administration might agree to allow Arkansas to implement Obamacare's Medicaid expansion by enrolling these newly Medicaid-eligible patients on the ACA exchanges. This has appealed to me and others, because the exchanges, for all of their imperfections, would be a substantial improvement to the broken Medicaid program in a market-oriented direction. However, we've learned in recent days that what the Obama administration is offering Arkansas is not, in fact, true exchange-based insurance, but rather a kind of private-sector window-dressing upon the Medicaid program. Unless HHS agrees to revise its stance and embrace true market-oriented reforms, the Arkansas legislature should oppose the Medicaid expansion in their state.
