Graying Asian Economic Tiger Rears Cubs From Offshore

They're sad old stories, and Taiwan has never liked telling them. The island's birth rate averaging one child per woman ranks among the world's lowest, a threat to long-term economic productivity. Capital has married talent and eloped to China where wages remain lower despite annoyingly small paychecks at home. Forecasting export growth, the traditional nest egg for Taiwan's economy, is like predicting earthquakes given today's uncertain consumer demand in the West. Samsung is selling more smartphones than Taiwan's homegrown HTC. Taiwan is where careers go to die, one white-collar Western expat who left for China (a common thing to do) would say. To quote another, whoever leaves last, please turn the lights out.

Do CMOs Impact Firm Performance?

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 09:06 PM PDT

Do marketers – and CMOs – actually matter when it comes to firm performance? Recent research by Nath and Mahajan suggests they don't. Their study, published in 2008, found that the presence of a CMO in one of the top paid positions in the firm had no impact on a firm's financial performance. In 2011, Nath and Mahajan reported results from another study which suggested CMO Power had no impact on a firm's sales growth or ROS. The reality is that these studies, conducted in an academically rigorous way, represent a nascent and embryonic understanding of the CMO and their impact on the firm. As a result, there is an absence of a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the CMO. Consider the following headlines from managerial articles  "Is the CMO Role Dying or Thriving?" "Marketing is Dead" "The CMO is Dead" "Is the CMO Dead?"  While scholars aren't finding many examples of how CMO's positively impact firm performance, some managerial articles are prognosticating the CMO's demise. The problem with these articles is that: (1) most are simply descriptive (e.g., 32% of CMOs don't understand how they are measured), which fails to provide any deeper cause and effect insight and (2) these studies are usually conducted by firms attempting to sell CMOs or CEOs services. In conjunction with CMO.com, we are conducting a first-ever "CMO Impact" study to truly understand how and in what ways CMOs impact firm performance. The objective is to help CMOs better understand how dimensions of the CMO position impact the CMO's ability to perform. Ultimately, the insight can be used by CMOs to identify and craft the "right" CMO role for specific circumstances which can lead to better results.

Company of Heroes 2 Review: A Refreshing Reboot

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 09:05 PM PDT

Relic Entertainment's Company of Heroes 2 feels much like the original 2006 title that added considerable depth to the real-time strategy genre, which was becoming bogged down by resource gathering titles.  Company of Heroes emphasized the idea that objectives matter and incentivized players to battle over key map positions instead massing forces and aiming for base destruction victories.  There was a focus on unit-to-unit interaction and a heavy focus on location and position.  Company of Heroes 2 does nothing to revolutionize or expand the genre as players move to the Eastern Front, but it does improve on many aspects of the original title.

"My intention is to ask the courts and the people of Hong Kong to decide my fate," he said. "I have been given no reason to doubt your system."
