Woman pulled alive from rubble of Bangladesh factory Posted: 10 May 2013 10:23 PM PDT By Rafiqur Rahman SAVAR, Bangladesh (Reuters) - A young Bangladeshi woman who spent 17 days buried alive under a collapsed garments factory was rescued on Friday when astonished workmen heard a voice calling "save me, save me" from the rubble. Pale, drawn but seemingly unhurt, Reshma Begum was cut from the ruins and hoisted onto a stretcher to wild cheers in scenes that captivated a nation which had long given up hope of finding any more survivors. When the eight-storey building collapsed on April 24, Begum was trapped in a lightless, cell-like nook - alone, but alive. ... |
Wounded Syrians show signs of chemical attack, Turkey says Posted: 10 May 2013 10:20 PM PDT By Suleiman Al-Khalidi AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian casualties treated in Turkey show signs of being victims of chemical weapons, the Turkish foreign minister said on Friday, adding to indications that President Barack Obama's "red line" on the use of such arms may have been crossed. Wary of the false intelligence used to justify the 2003 war in Iraq, the United States says it wants proof that chemical weapons have been used before taking any action in Syria. ... |

Microsoft's Japanese Windows 8 Ads Are Reatively Insane Posted: 10 May 2013 09:39 PM PDT We're not yet sure what to make of these Windows 8 ads that Microsoft has aimed for the Asian market. They were just released via a Microsoft YouTube channel and shared by the good people at GeekWire. The streaming spots -- which aren't meant to appear on TV -- certainly seem weird to our Western eyes, but they might be somewhat normal for Japan. |

Java Pioneer Chris Melissinos on How Video Games Are Changing The Future Of Our World Posted: 10 May 2013 07:50 PM PDT The Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum in Seattle has been hosting The Art of Video Games Smithsonian exhibit since February 16. I caught up with the exhibit's curator, Chris Melissinos during the final week of the exhibit, which closes May 13. The debate over whether video games constitute an art form is the latest iteration of the contentious battleground over the acknowledgement and recognition of video games as a viable cultural force. Melissinos is the recent recipient of the Ambassador Award at the 2013 Game Developers Choice Awards for his contributions in cross-platform video game technology development, video game preservation and advocacy and virtual world applications. He is also well known for his work towards building widespread support for Java-based game development while at Sun Microsystems. Melissinos had something to say about where his interest in games began, and how, indeed, video games fit into mainstream ideas of art, learning and society. |
