Tiger Airways makes debut on Singapore bourse Posted: 21 Jan 2010 07:14 PM PST SINGAPORE: Tiger Airways Holdings Ltd, the budget carrier part-owned by Singapore Airlines Ltd, gained on its trading debut after holding an Asian airline's largest initial public offering in five years. The stock rose as much as 5.3 per cent to S$1.58 in Singapore from an IPO price of S$1.50. The shares were up 1.3 per cent at S$1.52 as of 10:45 am The carrier raised S$233 million ($166 million) in the share sale. The retail portion of Tiger Air's sale was subscribed 21 times after the airline and low-cost rivals such as AirAsia Bhd won market share from flag carriers by adding more flights and offering cheaper fares. Singapore's Straits Times Index rose the most in a decade last year as Asian economic growth withstood the worst of a global recession. "People are more confident of a recovery in the airline industry and that the worst is over," said Rohan Suppiah, an analyst at Kim Eng Securities Pte in Singapore. "The question now is how strong a recovery we're going to see." The company, with operations in Singapore and Australia, sold 155.6 million shares in the IPO. Indigo Partners LLC, Tiger Air's second-biggest shareholder, sold 9.6 million existing shares. Citigroup Inc, Morgan Stanley and DBS Group Holdings Ltd. managed the sale. -- Bloomberg |
