Gulf oil spill costs BP some US$1.43 billion

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 04:59 PM PDT

LONDON: British oil giant BP said today it had spent about US$1.43 billion (RM4.7 billion) on efforts to contain the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and related costs.

BP added that it was "not aware of any reason which justifies" a near 16% drop in the group's share price in Wall Street trade yesterday.

Regarding costs incurred due to the oil spill, BP said in a statement: "The cost of the response to date is approximately US$1.43 billion, including the cost of the spill response, containment, relief well drilling, grants to the Gulf states, claims paid, and federal costs.

"This also includes the first US$60 million in funds for the Louisiana barrier islands construction project. It is too early to quantify other potential costs and liabilities associated with the incident."

The total figure of US$1.43 billion was up from US$1.25 billion announced by BP on Monday.

New York-traded shares in BP plunged 15.80% to US$29.20 overnight -- their lowest level in 14 years -- as the United States government gave the company 72 hours to produce updated plans for containing the oil spill.
