Chinese film crew in Bordeaux

(FRANCE, Pessac-AFP) - A Chinese film crew has taken over an 18th-century French wine estate to shoot a silver screen sequel to one of the country's most-loved romantic TV series, now set in the vineyards of Bordeaux. Until now the region was virtually unknown as a Chinese film location. Yet twelve years after "Cherish Our Love Forever" ended its hit run on Chinese television, the follow-up sees its two lead characters -- star-crossed lovers -- reunited far from Beijing in the sun-dappled wine hills of southwest France. Thousands in Russia make pilgrimage to relic of saint's hand

Posted: 05 Oct 2010 02:06 PM PDT

By Olga Rotenberg

FOCUS MOSCOW: Pilgrims stood patiently in line to kiss the silver-clasped fingers of Saint Spyridon, and to pray for the fourth-century saint to lend a divine hand in their family and money worries.

A queue outside Moscow's Danilovsky monastery stretched back several kilometres this week as thousands waited to see the relic of the Greek saint's right hand, which is briefly on loan to the Russian Orthodox Church.

But Russian believers said it was well worth the wait.

"Something happens to your soul that can't be put in words. It's some kind of warmth inside," said Tatyana Makhmutova, a 40-year-old civil servant, with tears in her eyes.

"His spirit is present here. It is as if he comes closer to us with his right hand. He blesses us," pensioner Inna Svezhentseva, 72, said.

Over 80,000 people visited the relic yesterday alone, some queuing for over five hours, as the Danilovsky Monastery in southeast Moscow stayed open day and night to accommodate the throng.

Student Kristina Grebenyuk, 18, said she had waited more than two hours on a chilly autumn day to see the relic. "As soon as I walked up, I felt complete inside," she said.

In total, around 700,000 thousand people made the pilgrimage over the three weeks that Saint Spyridon's hand was displayed in Moscow, bringing some modern-day problems to the early Christian saint.

Strong faith

"I want to ask for strong faith and for my son to go to church and my husband to stop drinking. There are many things that I want to ask him... simple things that affect my life," said pensioner Tatyana Fedotushkina, 59.

Alexander Vasilyev, 56, a builder, said he would ask about "a problem with housing, with construction and with getting the official documents", after his children advised him to turn to the saint.

Known as a patron saint of the poor, Spyridon is venerated in both Eastern and Western Christianity for leading a life of great piety more than 17 centuries ago in Cyprus.

His relics are preserved on the Greek island of Corfu. His right hand was cut off after his death and held separately in Rome until it was returned to Greece in 1984.

"He was loving. He loved those who had nothing. He helped people, he gave them food. He saved them from starvation, and gave them the means to buy bread," Father Alexy, an abbot at the Danilovsky Monastery, said of the saint.

"Even now he is performing miracles," Alexy said. "Two women were asking for help to pay their rent. They went in the metro and found an envelope containing 51,000 rubles (RM5,177) -- exactly the amount they needed."

Saint Spyridon's relic was to move today to Saint Petersburg, where it was to be displayed until Oct 15.

In 2007, when the relic was first brought to Russia more than 1.3 million Orthodox believers came to pay homage.

Born in 270 AD, Saint Spyridon became the bishop of the ancient city of Tremithous and is famed for explaining the Christian doctrine of the Trinity at a meeting of bishops in 325 AD.

According to religious historians, he argued the unity of the trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit by holding up a brick, which separated miraculously into the three elements of water, earth and fire.
