The journey -- Part 1: In the beginning Posted: 15 Nov 2011 11:14 PM PST On the morning of May 10, 1979, I set off from the tiny town of Bau to the central bus station in Kuching, and transferred to another bus that dropped me on the roadside just in front of Kuching Holiday inn, holding in my hands an old briefcase that went with my mom's dowry, and an employment letter from the Kuching branch of See Hua Daily News offering me a RM300 translator job. I slowly inched my way to the newspaper's office at Jalan Chan Chin Ann, and started work after arrangements were made to put me in the hostel. |

As much as I remember, when I was watching a district level basketball competition in my hometown while I was in primary school, I saw for the first time someone who was said to be a reporter from Kuching. The way he covered the event deeply impressed me for so many years, and I only came to know his actual identity, senior reporter Thomas Wong , after I joined the press much later on.
