Small and Affordable Brother Multifunction Device Prints 11 x 17-inch pages

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 10:20 PM PST

My wife and daughter are both teachers and sometimes need to print posters for their classrooms, which is why they appreciate the $199 Brother MFC-J4510DW multi-function printer/scanner/copier and fax machine that I've been testing.  The printer is on loan from Brother. Unlike most wide format printers, the device itself is reasonably petite, measuring only 8.9 inches deep x 11.4 inches wide x 7.3 inches tall. It takes up a lot less space than the HP OfficeJet printer that used to sit on my printer stand.

January 2013 In Music: A Spotify Playlist

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 10:19 PM PST

With the first month of 2013 wrapping up it's a good opportunity to take a listen to some of the new music that came out in the past 31 days (give or take) with the help of a Spotify playlist. January tends to be a quiet period of time for new releases, and this past month was no exception: That makes the task of building a playlist in Spotify, a streaming service I have some issues with due to its stunted catalog, a bit tricky.

Obvious Infringement: MEGA Now Has A Crowdsourced Index And Guess What?

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 09:49 PM PST

In my second post about the new MEGA encrypted file service I discussed the chess game that Kim Dotcom was playing with the policers of copyright. Dotcom designed the system, "So it doesn't know what you are storing on its servers and it can't find out." Pretty clever, eh? So I asked, "Is this a checkmate from the legal standpoint?" I answered my own question, "Not so fast." MEGA, of course, is not operating in a vacuum: The whole system can still be undone by its users, who have the power to share their files and the encryption keys to those files as they choose. Even though the terms of service strictly forbid uploading and distributing copyrighted material, users routinely ignore TOS—especially for a site whose lineage involves infringement on a massive scale. If users are sloppy with their links and post them to public sites that index pirated material, MEGA could face clear external evidence of what is on its servers—even if it cannot see the files itself. [bold italics for empahasis] In fact, less than a week after MEGA launched, its users—whether sloppy, defiant or just plain stupid—have done just that and posted links to their own files on an index site (seemingly operated out of France) called MEGA-SEARCH.ME (or SEARCH.ME MEGA, you pick). As you can see from the scrren shot above, the most popular mateial in the video section is clearly copyrighted material, disproportionately in French, some of it porn.

Did Facebook Buy Instagram Mainly So It Can Finally Run Ads With Big Pictures And Video?

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 09:48 PM PST

Advertising took center stage during Facebook's fourth-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, and for good reason: It's what investors are most interested in hearing about, even more than cool new features like Graph Search. Even CEO Mark Zuckerberg joined in, at one point noting that while the social network will continue to develop new user-oriented features to ensure its long-term appeal, for now "our work on ads will have by far the biggest impact on our business."
