Japan Stocks Rally Despite North Korean Nuclear Test

Japanese investors shrugged Tuesday after North Korea, an avowed enemy, said it had exploded a nuclear device. The Nikkei 225 index ended up nearly 2% in busy post-holiday trading as the yen weakened further on expectations of looser monetary policy. Reports of North Korea's test hit the market in afternoon trading, easing stocks off their daily highs, but there was no immediate sign of panic selling. Tensions on the Korean peninsula have previously weighed on sentiment in Tokyo, given Pyongyang's animosity towards Japan and its propensity to fire missiles into its waters. Confirmation by North Korea's official news agency that it had successfully detonated an atomic bomb, its third test since 2006, came towards the end of trading in Japan. Stocks in South Korea gave up earlier gains and ended down 0.2% on the news. Markets in Hong Kong and China remain closed for the lunar new year holiday.
