China may end long-hated labor re-education camps

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 10:40 PM PDT

In this Saturday, March 9, 2013 photo, Zhao Meifu, a farmer from Gansu province shows the papers of her labor camp detention in Beijing. Zhao had been seeking redress for decades over a land grab by village officials. Tired of her complaints, police saw the labor camp as a quick way to get rid of her. She was locked up in a long hated and often abused penal system known as labor re-education. Chinese police have used it to lock up tens of thousands of people for up to four years without a trial or a judge's review. Established to punish early critics of the Communist Party, it was retooled to focus on petty criminals but now is used by local officials to deal with people challenging their authority on issues including land rights and corruption. (AP Photo/Andy Wong)BEIJING (AP) — All it took was a handwritten note from police to send Zhao Meifu to a labor camp for a year in China's arid northwest.

The SSAC Interview of Albert Larcada

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 09:54 PM PDT

Throughout the month of March this blog will be publishing interviews with each of the four panelists that were on the 2013 Sloan Sports Analytics Conference's Soccer Analytics panel.  The first interview in this series with Chris Anderson and David Sally was published last week.  This week's interview is with ESPN Stats and Information analyst Albert Larcada.  Albert has worked for ESPN since earning Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Central Florida, and has helped them build and maintain a number of analytical models within ESPN including the Soccer Power Index.  I sat down with Albert ahead of the Sloan Conference's soccer-specific panel to discuss ESPN's models, how they integrate their data into storylines, where ESPN is looking to grow with their recent job posting within Albert's group, and where he thinks the conference can continue to grow in the coming years.

Opportunities For Healthcare Innovation SXSW Hipsters May Have Missed

Since Lisa Suennen already captured beautifully the distinction between the SXSW and HIMSS crowds last year, I won't belabor the point, other than to say that with all the ties and blue blazers present at today's Real Endpoints Symposium in Philadelphia, no one would mistake the attendees for Austin hipsters; I was grateful not to get tossed for wearing jeans.
