China's Cinema Boss No Fan Of Disney's Iron Man

Posted: 05 Jun 2013 08:58 PM PDT

Disney's 'Iron Man 3' has raked in over $100 million in China, but the country's top cinema boss, real-estate billionaire Wang Jianlin, isn't a fan. Far from it. "Iron Man [3] made a mistake. It didn't respect Chinese consumers," he says. U.S. studios "want to earn money in China but they want to keep their style." Wang owns Dalian Wanda Group, the largest private cinema operator in China. Last year he acquired AMC Entertainment Holdings, a U.S. theater chain, for $2.6 billion, making him the world's largest cinema owner, with talk of more overseas deals to come. Not a man that you want to cross when U.S. studios are courting Wanda as an investor in future movies. Wanda recently appointed an ex-Disney executive to run its creative division in China, which makes Wang's comments all the more intriguing.
